UMS's master's in Health Information Management is not accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Health Information Management (CAHIIM), though the program is designed to align to standards set by CAHIIM. As a result, completion of the MS in Health Information Management alone does not adequately prepare learners to be eligible to sit for the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) exam or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam. Students should verify that they meet all requirements to sit for the RHIA or RHIT exam by visiting http://www.ahima.org/certification.

The mission of the Master of Science program in Health Information Management is to prepare students for leadership roles in managing patient health information. Curriculum

Our 36-credit health information management program develops skills applicable to your career with courses such as Leading as a HIM Professional, Health Information Governance and Managing Coding Professionals.

The courses within the program address the full gamut of issues regarding information management in healthcare settings, including:

  • Creation of presentations and reports to use data in informing stakeholders about key organizational issues and developing policy
  • Security of patients' personal healthcare data, including the requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA), and implementation of effective policies

For the program capstone, you'll use what you've learned to design a comprehensive project for a complicated business environment.

Courses May Include

HIM Applications and Systems
Topics related to health information management, including revenue management, coding and compliance, developing professional identity, terminology and classification systems, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), and current trends are explored. Students tour a medical facility either virtually or in person.
